John Bailey, acclaimed cinematographer and former Academy President, has passed away at the age of 81. In a career that spanned from 1978 to 2022, Bailey worked across genres, from drama to rom-coms, documentaries to thrillers, including Robert Redford's Best Picture winner, Ordinary People (1980), Paul Schrader's neo-noir American Gigolo (1980), Lawrence Kasdan's comedy-drama The Big Chill (1983), Harold Ramis' romantic comedy Groundhog Day (1993), Wolfgang Petersen's action thriller In the Line of Fire (1993), and James L. Brooks' comedy-drama As Good as It Gets (1997).
The American Society of Cinematographers (@the__asc) recognized Bailey with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 at EnergaCAMERIMAGE Film Festival.
