Like millions around the world, Beck was infatuated with Japanese Kawaii culture growing up in the 1990s. Today, she draws on many of her past interests to create exuberant ceramic sculptures, that appear cute at first glance, but reveal darker undertones when viewed closer.⁠

"Only upon closer inspection do you notice the discordant glazes, the crude textures, and the face’s unblinking eyes and warped mouths," wrote a release on the show. "Up close, the figures are uncanny, bordering on grotesque, yet entirely engrossing. You can’t look away even as the yellow cat flickers between a representation of Pikachu and something much more sinister.⁠"⁠

'Soft Power' will go on view at The Pit's Glendale location in Los Angeles from November 11 to December 16, 2023.⁠
