At this time, Picasso and George Braque blew apart and explored their subjects from all angles and stopping just short of complete abstraction. In ‘La Glace,’ Picasso constructs his still-life subject through an extraordinary juxtaposition of curved and rectilinear lines, all heightened by a rich chiaroscuro to give a sculptural quality to the forms. The work holds a distinguished provenance, having belonged to the collection of Czech art historian Vincenc Kramář—one of the earliest proponents of Picasso and Braque’s Cubist works—for nearly 50 years until his death in 1960.
