At the start of a sumo bout, the two wrestlers collide with great impact.💥
For generations, specific training has been taught to help prevent them being injured.
Former sumo wrestler Matsuda Tetsuhiro competed for over 20 years. In a sport where the average weight is 160kgs, he only weighed around 100kgs, and retired at 47 without any major injuries.
Matsuda-san now manages a very famous sumo stable.
Here he demonstrates the first of four sumo exercises we will be posting.
This is the ‘koshiwari’ squat which is an essential part of ‘shiko’ - an exercise a sumo wrestler uses to strengthen their lower back.
