But only one copy was sold during his lifetime. Nowadays, his work is sold at a high price, but at the time it was very low and one of them was sold. He had no money and could not hire a model for his paintings, so he painted plaster and flowers as models. He had a bad reputation among those around him because he was emotionally unstable. His younger brother, Theo, was the only one who believed in his talent and supported him a lot, both financially and emotionally. Theo also cared so much for his brother that he gave his son the same name as ”Vincent Van Gogh“. Van Gogh painted a painting called ”Almond Blossom“ to celebrate the birth of his nephew, and in his work it is depicted as bright and calm. Six months after painting the work, Van Gogh died, and six months later, Theo, who was already sickly, died of mental breakdown due to the death of his brother. Did they expect that today, 133 years after his death, his work would be known all over the world? I can‘t take my eyes off him because he believed in his own talent and lived his life clumsily but without restraining himself. I heard it at this museum, but Van Gogh left these words. ”Art is not just about depicting what you see, but about making art that comforts deeply wounded hearts.“ どうして彼に心を惹かれるのだろか。彼が27歳で画家を目指し、37歳でこの世を去る間に描いた作品は約2000点。だが彼が生きている間に売れたのは、たった1枚だけだった。今では、彼の作品は高値で取引されているが、当時はとても安値でその1枚だけが売れた。彼は資金が無く、絵のモデルを雇うことも出来なかったので、石膏や花をモデルとして描いた。情緒が不安定ながら、何をしでかすか分からないと周りから評判の悪かった彼だが、唯一、弟のテオが兄の才能を信じて、生活面も精神面も大いに支えてきた。テオは兄の事をとても大切に思っており、自分の息子に「フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホ」と同じ名前を付けるほどだった。そんなゴッホは甥っ子の誕生を祝う為に「花咲くアーモンドの木」という絵を描いたのだが、彼の作品の中では明るく穏やかに描かれている。その作品を描いた半年後、ゴッホは亡くなり、そのまた半年後にもともと病弱なテオも兄が亡くなった事により、精神も衰弱してしまい亡くなってしまった。まさか、彼の死から133年後たった現代で、彼の作品が世界中に知られることを、彼らは予想していただろうか。自分の才能を信じ、不器用ながらも自分自身を抑え込まずに生きたゴッホからは、目が離せない。今回の美術館で聞いたが、彼はこんな言葉を残している。「芸術とは、単に見たものを描くのではなく、深い傷を負った心を慰める芸術を作ることである。」」11月2日 20時37分
