Pumpkins are dense and thick-skinned—a durable, albeit heavy trail food. They have lots of water and you can eat them raw (we’ll take @beauisms’s word for it). Most importantly, they possess a satisfying one-ness. There’s a simplicity about them.
Beau Miles has a small backyard patch. But a big trip requires a big pumpkin. So he obtained one from a generous neighbor, placed it on a map with his house at the center, and traced a pumpkin-shaped radius. As it turns out, a medium-sized pumpkin translates to just enough space on the topo for two and a half days of testing your legs and your GI system.
