This week on Behind the Views: Yu-Chen Chiu (@yuchenchiuart). Yu-Chen’s photography journey began during a time of isolation when she was new to the United States. “It became a gateway to the world, allowing me to capture candid moments on the streets and connect with people who mirrored my solo journey in the U.S. I found solace looking through the lens. Photography gave me a sense of purpose and a means to immortalize life's meaningful moments,” she recently shared with T+L. Today, Yu-Chen is a documentary photographer and interdisciplinary artist based Brooklyn, New York.
.
It all truly clicked for Yu-Chen when one of her photos was showcased in a museum for the first time. “It had been taken a decade ago, yet what struck me was how every person viewing it had their unique story and interpretation of the same image. This ignited my profound love for photography,” she says. “I’m drawn to its inherent ambiguity — the way an image can be both timely and timeless, enigmatic and enchanting. It evokes emotions and provokes memories within viewers. Each person seeks to unravel the puzzle, making photography truly magical in my eyes.”
.
Yu-Chen’s approach to shooting on trips: “I’m an adventure enthusiast, so I’m always up for the road less traveled. Before each trip, I research the destination to understand its culture and history, fueling my motivation and excitement. I make a preliminary checklist of what to capture, even though it may not always go as planned. Upon arrival, I go with the flow, seeking to capture the collective experiences that resonate with everyone. I also learn basic words in the local language as a sign of respect and to connect with the culture.”
.
When asked about her advice for aspiring photographers, she says, “Be yourself and stay relaxed. Creativity flows when you're at ease, and your vision becomes clearer. Don't feel pressured to emulate photographer A or B. Capture what truly interests you. While beautiful photos are appreciated, it's the intriguing ones that stand the test of time.”
.
In Yu-Chen’s go to gear bag, you’ll find a Fuji XT-30 camera, Nikon FM3 35mm film camera, extra lenses, and a tripod.
