In 1923, French artist Jean Dubuffet was given the book "The Art of the Mentally Ill" by German doctor Hans Prinzhorn, which included case histories of several asylum patients. The contents of this book inspired Dubuffet to start collecting what he would soon call Art Brut or the art of the alienated.

Dubuffet rejected traditional artistic norms and embraced a unique style characterized by raw, unconventional materials and childlike simplicity. His art often featured bold, abstract shapes, challenging the conventional aesthetics of his time.

Through his practice, Dubuffet created art to explore the "collective unconscious" and showcase the universal creative urge he felt was stifled by civilization.
