Every Carey Mulligan performance has a hidden music. For each of her roles, she has a playlist—“songs that take me into that world, that character,” she says. It’s a habit that began on the stage, and has taken on a life of its own with even some guest curators. (For Mulligan’s Oscar-nominated turn in “Promising Young Woman,” filmmaker Emerald Fennell provided the playlist; for “Maestro,” Mulligan did the playlist herself.) Music surrounds the actor’s life in many ways, actually. She describes her home life with three kids and husband and musician Marcus Mumford as “very normal.” In the countryside outside London it’s all “school runs, Sunday lunches,” she says.
