There are still days that I love photography. It is deep and real. It has been a complicated relationship since I had COVID-19 the first week of March 2020 which made the world slow down and me along with it.
I have been so busy since moving to Brooklyn in 1992 that I have had little to no time to reflect, or more likely, the desire to look inward and see what I might see. Success? Failure? Happiness?
Photography is ideal as a self-care practice because it happens in the present moment. Exactly why photography matters, is because it is a way to experience the world, to be present.
As Garry Winogrand is often credited with saying, on why he made pictures, ".......to see what the world looks like in a photograph." For me, it is that and the process of being inside and alone with myself, which sometimes is a hard place for me to be. People who know me well, understand this.
Depression is "living in" & dealing with the past, worrying about things you can't change. Anxiety is "living in" the future & worrying about things you can't control.
The "job" has made me develop the ability to go, see, photograph, and return. I find myself wishing I could go back and change some of my professional choices, but I can't.
Like an addict, it is one day at a time, trying to stay centered and less reactionary, working more from within.
