Handcrafted in painted silk taffeta, in Westwood’s London atelier, the couture gown created for Vogue World: London is inspired by a look from the Autumn- Winter 1997/98 collection ‘Five Centuries Ago’. Inspired by a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, attributed to the British painter Nicholas Hilliard (1598), the sea monster & floral print, reminiscent of that in the painting, is recreated here using a hand painted brushstroke technique. The plunging corset, remastered for the contemporary performance, and skirt system, which employs an origami like pleating technique, give theatrical grandeur to the gown.
The Elizabethan inspired recycled lace white jacket with ruff collar and cascading peplum enhances the opulence of the Elizabethan age. The look is finished with a giant pearl necklace, with adornments of skulls, cross bones and orbs.
