We went to Liberty State Park in New Jersey to get a clear view of the city. We shot early evening, when the sun just started to sink in the sky, creating crisp shadows and contrast on my subject and background. It was not golden hour yet, so I warmed up my white balance a bit to help emphasize the warmer tones. At first, I tried out an essential in my kit, the Canon RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lens. The images looked great but I wanted a bit more compression so I decided to try out the brand new Canon RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM lens. The results were, WOW! While typically this lens may be used for wildlife or sports, it was actually a perfect tool to achieve this effect. The background melted away beautifully when shooting wide open and I moved around to create varied compositions where the subject was framed by different buildings in the background. Furthermore, although the lens is ‘heavier,’ I was actually able to hand-hold it, giving me mobility to try many angles quickly. We got some really striking, dramatic shots with a focal length that I don’t usually shoot at… and I loved it!
