Do you recognise this famous splash? 💦

In this image we spy a section of 'Brushstroke with Splatter' 1966 by Roy Lichtenstein. The photograph was captured in 1997 at the Art Institute of Chicago by artist and photographer Louise Lawler, who is best known for her photographs of the interiors of museums and galleries. In the left half of the image we see part of a trolley used for moving artworks in and out of storage, complete with protective cardboard sheets.

Through her photography of artworks in different art spaces, Lawler investigates how display conditions influence their meaning. She employs close ups, cropping, unconventional angles and stark lighting to create unusual compositions and juxtapositions. Across all of Lawler's work, she acknowledges that the meaning of an artwork shifts and morphs depending on who looks at it and the context of its display.

Find Lawler's Splash 1996 inside #CapturingTheMoment at Tate Modern, an exhibition that investigates the ongoing relationship between painting and photography.
