Born in Strasbourg in 1886, Arp's artistic philosophy emphasized the exploration of form and chance as a means of artistic expression. "Head and Shell" is two separable elements. A spike attached to the base section supports the upper portion, which may easily be removed. During the 1930s, the artist produced several small works made of multiple elements that the viewer could pick up, separate, and rearrange into new configurations.
