Those that were used for practical use in the Edo period are called "classical netsuke" and "old netsuke", those produced between the Meiji, Taisho and the end of the war are called "modern netsuke", and those produced after the war called as well "modern netsuke". Modern netsuke inherits traditional techniques from the Edo period but continues to be made with new materials and techniques.
