Here’s a shawl you won’t want to wear this Fall: the Spanish shawl (Flabellina iodinea). Notice the bright orange tentacle-like appendages on its back? They’re called cerata, and they serve multiple purposes. They absorb oxygen from surrounding water, and they also store stinging cells, which this nudibranch gets from the anemones it feeds on. Not only is this sea slug immune to the anemones’ stinging cells, but it steals its prey’s defense mechanism for itself!
