Buckle in as we take you through a story of loss, perseverance, and hope. 🍿

Hundreds of years ago bison roamed the prairie grasslands as far as the eye could see. Due to overhunting, the bison population became all but depleted. A detrimental outcome to not only bison and other wildlife, but for the grasslands and ecosystem of the region.

Bison reintroduction was possible because of conservation methods put to work in the early 1900’s. After an initial herd was struck down with disease and did not survive, 10 bison from Elk Island National Park were brought to the Lake Audy Bison Enclosure to call it home in the 1940s.

The enclosure is 500 hectares in size (2.5 football fields fit in one hectare to give you a sense of size) and has openings throughout the fence to allow other wildlife such as deer and elk inside and out in an attempt to not disrupt their natural movements.

Although bison were re-introduced in Riding Mountain National Park as a display herd, today they are valued as much more. Their life cycle is intimately intertwined with the health of the prairie and its other inhabitants. Bison forage on specific grasses, forbs and trees; they create wallows and trails throughout the area; they add nutrients to the soil and they help propagate seeds, therefore contributing to the cycle of life. The importance of this native species is also recognized through the role they played in the development and life of the Indigenous people.

The bison you see today are all descendants from the herd introduced more than 80 years ago. 🥹
