At least 162 babies have died in incidents involving nursing pillows since 2007, an @NBC News investigation found.
Some babies slumped down on nursing pillows or arched backward off of them, constricting their airways, records show. Others turned their faces into the plush surface, suffocating as their parents slept feet away.
The cause of death was not always clear for every infant, and some had another cause of death, such as pneumonia, but a nursing pillow was mentioned as a potential factor.
NBC News’ list is almost certainly an undercount, as autopsy reports do not always include details about specific products and often are not made public.
Nursing pillows have become a must-have item for many new parents, with 1.34 million sold every year.
Manufacturers warn against using nursing pillows for sleep or without supervision, yet NBC News found dozens of instances where babies fell asleep with the pillows and died.
