In 1950, Ernest Hemingway, who was born on this day in 1899, stopped in New York on his way to Europe. He engaged in disgruntled coat buying (at Abercrombie & Fitch, no less), aggressive champagne drinking, and a long visit to the Met. Tap the link in our bio to read the story, by Lillian Ross, that documents his time in the city, which he called “a rough town, a phony town, a town that was the same in the dark as it was in the light.” Photograph by Earl Theisen / Getty.
