Between the 16th and the 19th centuries, the wealth and power of the kingdoms in central Myanmar grew as its courts twice expanded into huge mainland Southeast Asian empires.

In keeping with changes occurring across the Buddhist world during the 19th century, Burmese Buddha images like this one became more naturalistic looking.

In addition to the standard seated pose, Buddha images were also produced in standing and reclining postures to reflect the various events of the historical Buddha’s life.

This figure, with its elegantly folded robes edged with glass inlays, offers the devotee a medicinal fruit as a cure for spiritual woes.
