The Princess Royal has visited @Durrell_JerseyZoo’s Tortoise Takeover, an island-wide sculpture trail with colourful, inspiring, and thrilling works of art that will lead people on a trail to see the tortoises and their home on the Island. During her visit, The Princess Royal saw ‘Sanctuary,’ one of the giant tortoise sculptures designed to mark 50 years of Her Royal Highness’s Patronage. 🎨 The Princess chose the design by artist Gabriella Street, which features colours pulled from photographs of Her Royal Highness’s past and present fashion, as well as flora and fauna specific to The Princess’s many trips to Durrell projects and Jersey Zoo. Her Royal Highness later opened the Tortoise Tunnel at Jersey Zoo, a state of the art enclosure for 4 giant Aldabra tortoises. 🐢 The charity's island restoration programme in Mauritius has been working to restore vital ecosystems that have been lost due to the extinction of native tortoises.
