What you are seeing is not an endless lava field fanning out for thousands of acres, but rather burning moss in all directions and other debris that is quickly spreading around the eruption site. One of the main reasons the hiking trails to the eruption are closed.. the trails literally go between this smoke and the main crater. The smoke is carrying a thick cloud all the way to the parking lot. It’s like Mordor down there and because of the location of this latest eruption it has been much harder to find favorable conditions for visitation. Please respect the closures, save your lungs and look for alternate options like ✈️ 🚁 or just simply wait until the site is reopened. A proper mask is always recommended.
