The story goes that House founder Alfred Dunhill had a client that lost an arm during World War I and could no longer light his pipe. All lighters up to this point needed two hands to light them, so Alfred set about creating an innovative new solution.

Alongside British inventors Wise & Greenwood, he developed the first fully enclosed single-handed lighter, their first prototype used a tin of Colman’s Mustard. All dunhill ‘Unique’ lighters (as they became known) still feature the same horizontal mechanism.
