Charged with psychological intensity, ‘E.O.W. on her Blue Eiderdown VII’ (1963) is a vivid encapsulation of one of the most important figures in Frank Auerbach’s artistic and personal life.

Estella Olive West—E.O.W. as she was called by Auerbach—dominated his early artistic output and featured in more than 70 paintings. Recently widowed and left to care for three young children, E.O.W. was forced to open up her home in Earl’s Court, London to lodgers, the first of whom was Auerbach. Within a week of moving in, they embarked upon a tempestuous relationship that would span over 25 years.
