At a motel they paid a dealer $30 for three-tenths of a gram of white fentanyl powder, and then they parked at a carwash to smoke it. Drake went unconscious, his lips turning blue. Askins drove to a gas station, shouted to the clerk to call 911, and started administering CPR until the paramedics arrived. Askins waited in a police car until Drake was pronounced dead. He was charged with murder in the first degree. In 2023 in the U.S., fentanyl and other synthetic opioids lead to an average of 3,400 emergency room visits and 190 fatal overdoses each day. What was once an obscure drug used to treat pain in end-stage cancer patients has become the leading cause of death for Americans under 50, and now the debate in state capitols and courtrooms all across the country is over how to stop the crisis and whom to hold accountable for it.
