Today, we honor @therealopallee , the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” for her tireless efforts to gain recognition for June 19, 1865: the day that news of the emancipation reached the remaining enslaved African-Americans. Ms. Lee's unwavering determination & advocacy at the age of 89 sparked a movement that resulted in @potus Joe Biden passing a bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Ms. Lee's 2016 walk—from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C.—has inspired an annual event where supporters walk 2.5 miles in recognition of the 2.5 years it took for news of freedom to reach the remaining slaves.
