Uniting the full cycle of the “Modena Paintings” made by Jean-Michel Basquiat in the summer of 1982, an exhibition now on view at Fondation Beyeler (@fondationbeyeler) casts new light on a breakthrough moment in his early career.
These eight large-scale paintings, including “Profit 1,” which is shown here, are celebrated as among the artist’s most ambitious works. Basquiat made them in Modena, Italy, traveling shortly after his successful exhibition “Paintings” at the Larry Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles, in April–May 1982. During this time Basquiat often stayed at Gagosian’s U-shaped house in Venice Beach.
The planned solo exhibition in Modena ultimately did not take place, and these monumental works have never been shown together till now, more than forty years later. Follow the link in our bio to learn more.
