On #NaturePhotographyDay, leaf your worries behind and lose yourself in the tree-mendous beauty of the great outdoors.

In 1861, photographer Carleton Watkins traveled to Yosemite by stage and mule, taking with him the world's largest camera, apparently of his own design (and maybe of his own construction, too).

During that summer, in an extraordinary California valley surrounded by 3,000-foot cliffs, Watkins made thirty-four large-format pictures of the valley and the Mariposa Grove, and around one hundred smaller stereographs.

A few years later, Watkins's pictures would be the key documents wielded by a small group of San Franciscans who advocated for the preservation of Yosemite. After seeing the photographs, Congress passed and President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill preserving Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove.

Whether it's bird watching in the park or hiking in the woods, take inspiration from Watkins's photographs and snap some shots of nature's beauty today!
