I was lucky enough to get to debate this on @gmb ✈️❤️ It's actually quite crazy that we live in a culture that hates children so much that this is even a debate. I'll admit though, before I was a mum I would have had this same anti-child narrative. I wonder where it comes from? The lack of empathy for children. The lack of understanding for parents. But also just the overall sense of entitlement that anyone has any more right to a public space than anyone else. I've been on flights with rowdy stag parties and people who are rude to flight attendants - I'd rather they were banned on flights than children who don't know better. But also, when did we become insensitive and disconnected to children crying? I mean I get that it's not the best sound - but it's literally the sound of a child in pain? And then there's this wild idea that children shouldn't fly. So what if they have relatives abroad? Or need to go to a funeral or something? What if they just want to go on a family holiday? Trust me, if anyone deserves a holiday, it's parents because it's a 24/7 juggle. I'd really like to think I'd always be the woman who supports parents on flights. Let's be honest, it's usually mums too. Because every parent I know dreads a flight. Because they don't want to disturb other passengers. They worry about being judged. But whilst those people can put on some noise cancelling headphones and block out the sound whilst drinking a nice hot or alcoholic drink - the parents are left desperately trying to soothe and entertain. And they can't sleep. And they can't drink hot drinks in case they spill. Trust me, being a d*ck to that parent is not going to stop that child being upset. But it might stop them being able to stay calm and calm their child. Be the person who offers support. Or who puts on your headphones. If you feel entitled enough to dictate who should be in your space - don't use public transport. 🤪 I get that children are not everyone's cup of tea, they weren't mine.
