In our exclusive interview, the director, Rob Marshall, tells The New York Times how he made the exotic computer-generated dancing sea creatures in his 2023 adaptation of the underwater fairy tale about a mermaid who trades her voice for love.

Narrating the scene, Marshall called it “the most challenging musical sequence I’ve ever created.” This is the latest episode of our Anatomy of a Scene series, where film directors reveal the secrets of making movies and comment on the craft of movie-making.
