Yaeji started as a DJ in the leftfield, electronic underground scene before producing. “It all started from dance music and making mashups and edits. Dance music taught me the phonetic and rhythmic nature of using my voice, and repetition; something that’s still in my music today.

My lyrics flow with no rules, so I’m not sure how exactly they come to be, but I recognize that some things are more easily expressed in Korean than English,” says the self-taught Korean and American DJ, singer and songwriter.

“Because I have the technical tools, I can express my way without compromising anything. Not compromising anything is key, because I need it to be real and truly me. That’s what I want to share with young people who listen to me: they can relate and feel heard and seen through my music.”
