Sands enjoyed an extremely full social life as a young woman and into old age, and was known as one of the most important hostesses in English society. She opened her doors and created a warm atmosphere for artists and writers to meet, chat and exchange ideas. After her death in 1962, Sands left behind a wealth of correspondence now kept in the Tate Archive, containing letters from important figures of the day—many of whom probably enjoyed a cup of tea on this couch.
#EthelSands' chintz couch is on free display at Tate Britain.
