In #TheLightWeCarry, I share the story of the time when my mom insisted it was time for me to walk to and from elementary school all by myself. I was in kindergarten then, around five years old, and I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Did she really believe I could walk to school alone?”

My mom understood the importance of setting aside her fears and allowing me the power of my own competence. And because she had faith in me, I had faith in me, too. As scared as I was, I felt a sense of pride and independence, which became important building blocks in my foundation as an independent human being.

You can read more about decoding fear in my book, The Light We Carry, and once you do, go ahead and share your favorite lessons that your mother or mother-figures in your life taught you in the comments.
