This year marks the 50th anniversary of the withdrawal of American military personnel from Vietnam. Specialist James E. Brown II, on the right in the first photo, was part of the 20th Engineer Brigade during the Vietnam War. His unit cleared jungles, paved roads and built bridges to support American and allied forces. Brown and a fellow platoon member are pictured atop a jeep while in Vietnam around 1970.

A resident of Laurinburg, North Carolina, Brown graduated high school in 1969 before leaving for Vietnam the following year. He was among the 300,000 African Americans who served in Vietnam. African Americans accounted for 16% of total Military Forces during the Vietnam War. For comparison, African Americans accounted for 12% of the general American population during that time.

Brown donated this photo and other items to our @nmaahc in 2013. Swipe to see his military fatigue shirt. #SIVietnamWar50th #VietnamWar50th
