In her new Creative Capital project Standard Candle, 2021 Grantee Sarah Rosalena is centering Indigenous and female knowledge in space exploration. 🔭
Staged in the Mount Wilson Observatory’s 100-inch Hooker telescope, the exhibition features woven and beaded textiles made with computer code based on images captured by the Hooker telescope. Using instrumentation and darkness as a lens for examining women’s labor and colonialism, Standard Candle highlights the role of Indigenous and female labor in the advancement of western scientific thought and the imaging of space. 💫
In her Creative Capital Artist Diary, @Sarah_Rosalena shares what she hopes viewers will take away from the exhibition, and offers a look into the looms and over-300 hours of beadwork it took to create her incredible works. Read it at the 🔗 in our bio, and see Standard Candle presented by @ロサンゼルスカウンティ美術館 and on view at Mount Wilson Observatory in Los Angeles, CA from May 6–June 4, 2023. There will be a Conversation, Telescope Viewing, and Reception on May 6 from 7:00–11:30PM.
