Welcome to #EntoMonday, a new series where we’ll be highlighting critters found in the Susan and Peter J. Solomon Family Insectarium. 🐜 Visitors will soon be able to see a colony of more than one million leafcutter ants (Atta cephalotes) that now call the Museum’s Richard Gilder Center for Science, Innovation, and Education home. You’ll see forager ants hunting for suitable leaves. When they find a good leaf source, they lay down a chemical trail on their way back to the nest, so that other foragers know where to go. But leafcutter ants don’t eat the leaves they are collecting. Instead, they use pieces of leaves to grow a specific type of fungus. Neither species would exist without the other, because this fungus lives only in leafcutter nests, and the ants eat little else. The Gilder Center opens to the public on May 4 at 2 pm. Photos: A.
