One of my favorite activities on Galveston Island was my self-guided tour around the island in a Model-T golf cart from @carriagehausrentals It was so relaxing. I spent the morning admiring the beautiful homes and wooden art sculptures in the yards and gardens. The island used to have magnificent oak trees lining the streets forming canopies. In 2008 Hurricane Ike uprooted thousands of these trees, killing them. Homeowners decided to create beauty from the destruction and hired sculpture artists to carve art from the dead tree trunks. The sculptures are spread across the island and are a moving symbol of rejuvenation.
