While working on it, she realized she wanted to do more. “I decided I needed to be feet on the ground and do something tangible to help the people of Fort Myers.” Joy signed up to volunteer with @SoCalRedCross and fast-tracked her training in just under a month. She deployed to Florida for two weeks, helping with damage assessment and going door-to-door in impacted areas to document the extent of property damage. “Not one person was unkind,” she recalled. “Everyone was so happy to see us and so many people had tears and everybody wanted a hug. It was very uplifting.” While still deployed, Joy made the decision to donate her quilt to the Red Cross, instead.
