The Jidai Matsuri (時代祭り) or the “Festival of the Ages” is held every October 22 in Kyoto, Japan. In celebration of the anniversary of the foundation of Kyoto, over 2,000 participants dress in costumes from various periods of Kyoto’s 1,200 year history and transport a portable shrine called a mikoshi from Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所) to the Heian Jingu Shrine.
