In Gamba, Gabon, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s Gabon Biodiversity Program works directly with primary school students to engage children with nature. Since 2017, scientists have taught in local schools, this year reaching more than 250 students from five public and three private primary schools. Students learn about topics like the importance of nature for their community, the threats to biodiversity and the planet, and solutions to the environmental challenges their community faces. By reaching students at an early age, scientists educate Gamba’s young residents on stewardship of the natural world and expose them to conservation-related careers and opportunities.
