#Porto is the second largest city in #Portugal with a ton of history and full of culture.

Here are 10 interesting things you might not know about Porto:

1. Porto was originally called Portus Cale, which influenced the name of the country Portugal. Historians argue the name comes from either:
- The Gallaeci, a Celtic tribe of Iberia
- A Celtic word meaning “port” (the place where boats dock)
- The Greek word "Καλλις" meaning “beautiful” (referring to the beauty of the Douro valley)
- The Latin word "calidus" meaning "warm" ("Portus Cale" thus meaning "warm port")

2. While Porto developed in the 4th century ACE, the earliest evidence of settlers dates back to the 8th century BCE. This makes Porto one of the oldest European cities.

3. Porto is fondly called “Invicta”, which means "invincible" in Portuguese. This nickname comes from the 19th century Portuguese civil war when the enemy failed to conquer the city.

4. In 1415, Porto residents donated all of their meat reserves to soldiers for the conquest of Ceuta, which left them with only animal tripe to eat. After that, the people of Porto were called "Tripeiros" (tripe-eaters). The nickname stuck and is still used today.

5. Porto is known as the city of bridges due to its 6 iconic bridges that span the Douro River.

6. The Sao Bento train station in Porto is considered one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.

7. Port wine comes from this region. This fortified wine is widely accepted as the city’s dessert wine, especially as it is made along the Douro River.

8. A Francesinha is the city’s typical dish. This sandwich is made with different kinds of meat and sausage, cheese, and a delicious tomato beer sauce.

9. One of the largest street festivals in the world takes place in Porto on June 23 to celebrate the patron saint of the city – Saint John. Quirky traditions during Festa de São João do Porto include smashing each other's head with plastic hammers, jumping over bonfires (to prove your courage), and offering friends basil plants decorated with handwritten poems.

10. The historic center of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.

Will you add Porto to your #bucketlist?
