Lawrence Abu Hamdan practices what he calls “forensic listening” by documenting and analyzing sound using video, installation, and live performance. Through his monologues, the artist becomes a conduit for the discoveries and connections he has made through his extensive research.
At MoMA, the artist presents three performances that highlight the capacity for sound to exonerate or incriminate: “After SFX” (2018) features instruments created to unlock acoustic memories; “Natq” (2019) examines “reincarnated testimonies” that span generations; and “Air Pressure” (2021) analyzes Lebanon’s aerial soundscape and the impact of background noise on atmospheres of violence.
These works are shown alongside Walled Unwalled (2018), a video installation adapted uniquely for MoMA's Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio, which explores our contradictory relationship to borders and privacy.

This project is presented in conjunction with “Signals: How Video Transformed the World.”
