Wolfie has always been a pretty chilled baby & he was quite a good sleeper, or so we thought. He learnt to suck his thumb and therefore didn’t have a problem being dummy-dependent like India did. He will be 2 in June and with third baby on the way & needing more space, we asked India about room sharing. She was thrilled at the thought - especially to have bunk beds. Problem is though - Wolfie has been waking at 5am & not re-settling at all. Although we would leave him, he wouldn’t go back to sleep so we got into the habit of taking him into our bed as soon as he woke - so not to wake India in the next room, but this not sustainable in the long term and wakings started to get even earlier. We decided to get help and called @magic_sleep_fairy Alison observed Wolfie and noted a number of ‘oddities’ - especially watching the video monitor all night! He actually didn’t really sleep peacefully but was restless, sitting up but not crying, thrashing around and clearly uncomfortable. Alison’s Tips on Early Waking: 1. Find out what’s really going on by watching on a video camera to see if your toddler really does sleep soundly or are they actually tossing and turning a lot before waking up early and refusing to go back to sleep. This could indicate that they’re digestively uncomfortable and you need to address this before trying any ‘sleep training’. 2. Scrutinizex their diet, tummy, digestion, poo etc to ensure all is well and there is no underlying digestive discomfort, dietary intolerance or acid reflux causing the early waking. 3. Stop giving large milk feeds just before bed - reduce the amount you offer, give them milk earlier - before bath for example or stop altogether. 4. Try an earlier bedtime rather than a later one, as less sleep will make them more tired, sleep deprivation builds and then their sleep is even more disturbed. Remember- Sleep breeds Sleep! Alison also suggested getting a grow clock ( which I thought was mad as he would never understand) but I was so wrong! Wave the owl goodnight as part of your bedtime routine, watch the screen go blue and make a point of waving to orange owl as you go into the room in the morning. 👇🏼 MORE IN COMMENTS
