From TikTok’s controversial “bold glamour” filter to the cartoon emojis used by moms in the family group chat, the metaverse is hard at work. You’ve likely used it and been charmed. And it’s just a matter of time before everyone’s on board.

While the advent of social media allowed users to post edited versions of themselves to the world, and receive quantifiable approval soon after, features of the metaverse “create more of a gap between what we perceive as our ideal self and what we in fact look like,” explains clinical psychologist Sophia Choukas-Bradley.
