Many folks who came to this play including my very conservative Godmother, who said “she loved it and learned something” I stand with my fellow drama nerds in Fort Wayne. Repost: Recently, Carroll High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana picked the play to be their Spring Drama production. The students were made aware of the subject matter and given the choice to participate or not. The text of the play was approved by the Carroll High Administration, with a few select cuts. Auditions were started and many members of the school's LGBTQ+ community auditioned as this play would be a giant step forward for representation. On the second day of auditions, adults within the Northwest Allen County Schools system learned of the play and the subject matter and began calling the school administration in protest. Some callers used threatening tones. The School Administration called off the play due to the "safety concerns" raised. Carroll High school had planned to present a "Teen Edition" of the play that the publisher, Concord Theatricals, offers with a script adapted specially to be performed by teen actors for family audiences. "I’ll be fine whether the production is cancelled or not, but I worry about these students and students all over the country who are being told it’s not okay to be who they are," said Szymkowicz. "My play is about inclusion, and it’s a shame for a play to be shut down by bigotry in this way.
