David Jolicoeur (aka Trugoy The Dove aka Plug Two) was one third of the massively influential hip hop group De La Soul and their 1989 debut ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ blew my tiny mind as a teenager. I vividly remember seeing the video for ‘Me Myself And I’ on ITV’s ‘Chart Show’ and being so intrigued and amused. Later, I had the album on cassette and listened to it on repeat, the first hip hop album I’d ever heard in its entirety and certainly the first album that I remember with ‘skits’. Beyond just the rhymes in the songs, I can still recall to this day lines from the game show bits - “How many fibres are intertwined in a Shredded Wheat biscuit?”, “How many time did the Batmobile catch a flat?”, “My favourite movie is Bloodsucking Freaks just like your mama”. It’s ironic that ‘3 Feet High And Rising’s next level use of samples got them into hot water with the many artists being reinterpreted, as I can truly say this albums use of samples made me a fan of those original tracks, resulting in a new appreciation of Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Johnny Cash, The Turtles and so many more. Never has one single album led me to more other music. I’ll go further - The use of the Detroit Emeralds ‘Baby Let Me Take You’ in ‘Baby Driver’ comes directly as a result of me having heard the sample in ‘Say No Go’ from De La Soul. (NB: thanks @whosampled!) I never got to see them live as a band in full concert but I erupted in joy when they took the stage with Gorillaz in 2010 at the London Roundhouse to sing ‘Feel Good Inc’ and ‘Superfast Jellyfish’. Still one of the best gigs I’ve ever attended. Dave’s sad passing comes just before the entire @wearedelasoul back catalogue is re-released next month. I can’t wait to get them on vinyl and fall in love all over again. Even just that debut is one of the all time great albums and a portal into so much more. RIP Plug Two.
