Original dispatch to the Admiralty, relating to the disappearance of a number of able seamen, presumed not to have deserted but to have been taken by the enemy.
Signed on 20th. October 1794 at Leghorn [ Livorno ] by Captain Horatio Nelson in a confident hand before he had lost his right arm in 1797.

The antecedent of Gieves in Portsmouth, Mel Meredith, reputedly made Nelson's uniforms, in particular the one in which he died in 1805.

Meredith's naval tailoring business later formed part of an amalgam of naval tailors which eventually became known solely as Gieves.
