Mental health check-in! Out of five of my days, one is a great day, three are blah days, and two are bad days (flawless math!). Sometimes I can string together 3 good days, but you better believe I’m sinking to the bottom of the ocean afterwards. My lows have been one of my biggest challenges in life, often causing squandered opportunities, stifling relationships, or just ruining a lot of good days. I recognize my fortune and privilege to have the means to take breaks, seek help, and work on myself. I recognize we don’t all have this luxury. But we do have each other.

Look – feeling shitty isn’t something I ever want to talk about. Because it’s an emotional drain for everyone, because it feels embarrassing, because I’d rather not be perceived as a bummer. We all feel something is off, we’re human. But talking about it is so damn important, and not just talking to your dog about it. Check in with your friends, your neighbour, your family members, even if that means spending time with someone that drives you mad. Sometimes they’re the ones that need someone the most. And this doesn’t mean calling and saying “how are you *doing*?”, this might just mean calling and saying “what’s up I was thinking about you!”.

Among the things that help me cope – exercise, meditation, therapy, dogs(!) – the one chaotic element that throws my slumps out of orbit is having a friend reach out, show up, or call me out of the blue. I hope you have a friend like this. And when you can be, I hope you are that friend. You are not your slump, you are not your shitty day. You are a multifaceted human who is made up of infinite intermingling parts and even more possibilities.

You’re proof that a masterpiece can still be a work in progress.
