It's #ManateeAppreciationDay and we appreciate the fluorescent flair our @silibraries added to this page in their collection. These are South American manatees from an 1880s volume of the journal "Forest and Stream."

The scientific order that includes manatees is named Sirenia, and in many languages, “siren” means mermaid.

Centuries ago, sailors mistook manatees for mythical creatures, maybe because they had flat tails and could turn their heads. Also, ocean life back then was still largely a mystery—think of how much we still don't know about the oceans today.
