Denae Joseph organizes on behalf of the estimated 619,000 Black undocumented immigrants in the United States whose experiences often go overlooked. As Denae states, “This silence has policy implications.” Black undocumented immigrants are adversely impacted by their status as both Black and undocumented because of structural racism in the United States. Black immigrants are deported at a disproportionate rate compared to other immigrants; they are detained longer and are placed in solitary confinement more frequently.

Denae and other undocumented Black organizers push hard to make these circumstances visible to policymakers and other immigrant rights organizations. They recognize that throughout U.S. history political and civil rights have not been fully guaranteed for African Americans. Therefore, Black organizers like Denae sound the warning bell that citizenship should not be the end-goal of undocumented political activism. Denae argues that by centering Black lives we can better understand the full impact of current enforcement laws.

Denae Joseph’s interview is featured in our Tell Me What Democracy Looks Like series, part of the museum's ongoing Undocumented Organizing Collecting Initiative. Visit our site to learn more and find related educational resources available in English, Spanish, and Korean: s.si.edu/tmwdll.
